About the author

NICHOLAS OLDLAND (born July 29, 1972) is a Canadian children’s author and illustrator, as well as creative director at Hatley/Little Blue House, a popular children’s and women’s apparel company. He earned a degree in fine arts at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada, and enjoyed success as a commercial artist and documentary filmmaker before taking up the role of creative director at Hatley. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with his wife, Abbey, four kids and his dog, Chief.

Nick has said that he always wanted to write a book that you could take to bed with a pair of Hatley pajamas, but “he quickly discovered writing a book was a lot harder than he imagined. Instead, he found easier things to do, like going for lunch, playing with his kids and napping.”

That all changed in 2009 when he realized the sketches in his notepad actually formed a story, that would later become Big Bear Hug. Many more books were soon to follow, including the award-winning Making the Moose Out of Life (2010), The Busy Beaver (2011), Dinosaur Countdown (2012), Up the Creek (2013), Walk on the Wild Side (2015), One Wild Christmas (2019) and Hockey in the Wild (2020).
