About the author

RICHARD SCARRY (1919-1994) is one of the world’s best-loved children’s authors and illustrators. Generations of children all over the world have grown up immersed in his books filled with colourful details and beloved, iconic characters. He has written more than 200 books which have gone on to sell more than 150 million copies globally that have been translated into about 30 languages.

Richard Scarry was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 5th, 1919. His early talent for drawing led him to attend the Art School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 1943, he was drafted into the army to become a 2nd Lieutenant posted in North Africa, where he would draw maps and posters featuring scenes of news from home to entertain his fellow troops. After the war, Richard moved to New York to become a professional artist, and soon started getting commissions for advertising in magazines. At a garden party, he met a beautiful young lady named Patricia Murphy, a fellow children’s book author, who not a few weeks later would become his wife.

Scarry’s career as an author and illustrator of children’s books picked up in the 1950’s when Little Golden Books began to publish his work. He began by illustrating for other well known children’s authors, like Margaret Wise Brown’s “Two Little Miners”, and his wife Patsy’s, “The Bunny Book”. His first book, both written and illustrated by him, published in 1951, was “The Great Big Car and Truck Book”.

However, it was in 1963 that Scarry’s career really reached its peak with the publishing of “Richard Scarry’s Best Word Book Ever”, that became his first best-seller. This now iconic book features over 1400 items for children to gain knowledge from and even teaches crucial values like sharing and helping. Filled with anthropomorphic animals (animals that have human-like qualities) such as bears, cats, rabbits and numerous other animals, “Richard Scarry’s Best Word Book Ever” manages to amuse children at the same time as teaching them things like numbers and words. His goal with the book, as it was with his numerous future publications, was for kids and parents alike to find something new with each reading.

In his extraordinary career, Richard Scarry wrote and illustrated hundreds books, many of which have never gone out of print. He passed away at his home in Gstaad, Switzerland, in April of 1994. He was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Society of Illustrators in 2012. His son, Richard “Huck” Scarry Jr., carries-on his father's work, and has himself written and illustrated numerous books featuring his father's charming characters. Huck delights at meeting excited readers at events around the world.  📖
